From Cool to Folsom; this course follows the Nineteenth Century gold miners path along the North Fork of the American River.
This path was worn in by miners in search of a good sand bar for gold panning.

Eventually their path would become known as the Pioneer Express Trail: the most express route from the gold fields along the American river to Folsom.

The course starts at the Cool Horse Staging Area in Cool, CA., runners will complete a clover leaf style loop and then will connect to the Pioneer Express Trail toward Folsom by using the Western States trail. The race will end along the American River Bike path at Beals Point Recreation Area, where camping and lake access is available.

The course is 99% trail.

Bring your swim suits, there is water on the lake!

50 mile finishers will receive a long sleeve jacket and relay finishers will receive a long sleeve Tee along with all the extra swag STR is known for.



Pacer are only to join the runner at designated spots. Please, see the chart below for detailed instructions.

Pacers are not allowed in the Relay race.

Relay team:

Come test your limits as a team! - You and another of your friends can run all the way from Cool, CA to Folsom, CA

Only one runner at a time. This event consist of Two legs:

1st leg - From Cool to Auburn Overlook point (24.1 miles**)

2nd leg - From Auburn (gate 142 AS) to Finish at Beals Point recreation area (25.9 miles**)

Cut off times:

The event will have a total allotted time of 14:00hrs. See chart below for cutoff times along the course

Runners will have to switch bib numbers. We recommend using a running belt to quickly switch the number between runners.

What’s Included

11 Aid Stations

Pioneer Spirit 50 is probably the best 50 miler for first timers and seasoned runners, with 11 full aid stations along the course and 10 of them with crew access, this is definitely an event that involves runners and spectators alike. If you plan to have a crew, click here for a printable crew directions. Pacers are only allowed to join their runners at designated spots, see the AS chart below for more details.


Shuttle to the start area is included in your registration.

The Shuttle bus will pick up runners at the Finish line (Beals Point Rec. area) at 3:45am. Runners will then be transported to the start of the race in Cool, CA. Runners cannot leave anything in the bus. We will have bags where you can place all your belongings to be transported to the finish line. There is camping available at the finish line, roll out of your tent and jump in the yellow bus.

Cupless Event

Each runner is responsible for bringing their own reusable cup or water bottle. Reusable cups are small, are no problem to carry along while running and will save thousands of cups from being trashed, and possibly blown away littering our beautiful trails. We will have some small collapsible water containers for sale at the event, or we recommend you purchase one in advance at your local running store or online at HydraPouch.

Major Swag

All of STR events are filled with goodies, while we know the killer hills and post race party will make you want to sign up again, we celebrate your finish with major swag. All of Pioneer Spirit 50 Miler finishers will receive a jacket, and each Pioneer Spirit 50 Miler relay finisher will receive a long sleeve tee along with all of the extra swag.

Custom Bibs

All runners will receive a custom bib with the elevation profile. This profile will allow you to see what’s ahead on the course during the race. The elevation profile is placed upside down so you can easily read it while the bib is pinned to your shorts or t-shirt.

Amazing Post Race Feast

Pioneer Spirit 50 is not only known for the killer hills, amazing aid stations, and very likely high heat. But, is also known for the amazing post race party feel with plenty of pizza and local craft beer.
